Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is it and how does it work?
A microchip is a small, electronic chip about the size of a grain of rice that is placed just below the skin between the shoulder blades. There is a special microchip scanner that is used to read the chip through the skin. Each chip has a unique number it transmits to the scanner and that is what is used to register your pet to you.
-
My pet already wears a collar and tag, why do they need a chip?
Collars can fall off or break, tags can be lost or wear off so they are illegible. A combination of a microchip, properly fitting collar and current identification tag are the best insurance policies you can provide to keep your animal friend safe. Also, though it isn’t common if your pet is ever stolen you have permanent proof of ownership.
-
How long does a microchip and registration last?
Microchips are made to be in your pet for life and does not require batteries, charging or physical maintenance. The registration we provide also lasts for the entire life of the pet for no additional charge.
-
Can I use the microchip to track my pet like GPS?
Unfortunately microchips at this time cannot provide this service. It is more akin to a permanent identification tag. There are GPS tracking collars & tags on the market that can provide this service.
-
Is it painful for my pet?
Microchips have come a long way and the needles used to place them are now just slightly bigger than the average vaccine needle. They will feel a quick pinch but once placed there shouldn’t be much discomfort.
